About the Artist

Vic Cumming was born and brought up in South Africa. His love of art manifested itself very early in his life. Sketching and painting, primarily in oils, began at a young age. He studied and began developing techniques with colors and materials, covering a variety of subjects. Today, his medium is almost exclusively watercolor. The paintings he creates have brilliance rarely seen in this soft, transparent medium.

In 1986 Vic moved to San Clemente, CA. and began expanding his interest in the art community. He attended classes and workshops taught by some of Southern California's most respected teachers.

His work covers many subjects, but those receiving the greatest recognition have been for his floral series. The brilliance of color he achieves and the subtlety of his brush stroke gives a feeling of motion to his paintings. His backgrounds create dramatic balance to the vibrancy of his flowers.

Vic's work has been exhibited in the prestigious Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach and the Sandy Martin Gallery in San Clemente. His first entry in the Orange County Fair awarded him the "Theme Award" in a field of 1700 entrants. He has won numerous awards, including several Best of Shows, and First and Second placements in the Masters Division of juried shows.

Vic is a member of the National Watercolor Society, the San Diego Watercolor Society, the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts, the San Clemente Art Association and the Niguel Art Association. His paintings are in collections throughout the United States, Europe and South Africa. As an exhibitor in the prestigious Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, his work was accepted in his first application for placement.

His commissions to CBS Television have been featured at the US Open Tennis Championships as well as the joint venture of CBS/NFL games on-going from 1998. His current commission to CBS now hangs in the office of the Chairman of the Board of CBS Television.

He has had successful one-man shows at the Parkhurst Galleries in Ports O'Call in San Pedro and Seal Beach, and he has been the featured artist at the famous Rogers Gardens inNewport and the Sandy Martin Gallery.

Because he feels that he has been given a talent, Vic is one who believes in giving his artwork to worthy causes – and he has been doing so for many years. His paintings are then usually auctioned or raffled for the benefit of the organizations. Among the recipients of his work are:

Kiwanis Club of San Clemente
Kiwanis Club of San Clemente, Pacifica
Kiwanis Club of Lake Forest
Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa
Kiwanis Club of Laguna Woods
Boys and Girls Club of San Clemente

"One day when I walked the Dana Point Harbor where there was an art show, I came upon a display of the most beautiful flowers I've ever seen. I was attracted to them like a magnet and knew that I had to have at least some of them.

"I called my husband to come to the harbor to view the work, and as a happy coincidence, my husband had had their grandson as a student in his kindergarten class.

"Since that day, Vic's beautiful flowers decorate our home, and several of my siblings homes as well. And we have also become close friends!"
